Top 8 Popular Shopping Holidays Other Than Black Friday
Every month of the year, as any savvy consumer knows, is a chance to score discounts on your favorite items—or trips!—if you know where and when to look.
From news coverage and shopping guides, KnowInsiders compiled a list of eight popular shopping holidays that every consumer should mark on their calendars. We skipped some obvious holidays like Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, and Father’s Day for this guide in order to give you the true blockbusters—and the lesser-known gems.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is always observed on the third Monday of January. It was first designated as a day of service in 1994 to honor the leader of the African American Civil Rights Movement, but it has since become a time for major retail sales. Because January has traditionally been a slow month for retailers, the month was chosen to heavily discount bed and bath linen sales.
Customers can also expect winter apparel sales as retailers make room for new inventory, as well as fitness gear for those looking to meet their health goals for the new year. However, this does not mean that customers looking for other items will be disappointed. MLK Day weekend sales are similar to other shopping sales periods, with discounts across the board.

The Memorial Day federal holiday is always observed on the last Monday of May, but sales for this retailer-independent holiday can begin as early as three weeks in advance. While customers can expect to save on nearly every product category during Memorial Day sales, mattresses and furniture have historically topped the list of great deals. Customers can get great deals on spring clothing because Memorial Day is the first holiday with shopping sales in the warmer months. Because big sale weekends like Memorial Day can overwhelm consumers, many news outlets keep regularly updated roundups of the best deals in every product category as they are announced.
April sales are followed by more in May. Here are some items to consider purchasing this month:
Spring fashion. Spring clothing that has been on the racks for a month or two will be discounted by May.
Furniture. Black Friday, Labor Day, and Memorial Day are three of the busiest shopping days. Because Memorial Day is in May, look for big-box store discounts on furniture and home decor.
Kitchen appliances that are small in size. Use May discounts to purchase small kitchen appliances such as coffee makers and blenders. Typically, these products are included in Memorial Day sales, and they make great gifts for upcoming summer weddings.
You may not be aware that 18 states in the United States have a set number of tax-free days each year. The duration of state sales tax holidays varies, as do the discounts available. August is the most common month for sales tax holidays, with 13 states participating.
With 14 states participating, clothing is the most tax-exempt product during these sales tax holidays, followed by school supplies (nine states), computers (six states), and Energy Star products (four states). Other tax-free purchases can range from hurricane-resistant doors and windows in Florida to discounts on firearms, ammunition, and hunting supplies in Mississippi. If you live in Texas, you may be able to get a sales tax break on air conditioners that cost less than $6,000.

Buying summer products to end the summer? That’s correct. In August, look for end-of-season clearance sales on:
Back-to-school items. The start of school necessitates the purchase of both low-cost items such as notebooks and pencils as well as more expensive items such as calculators and laptop computers. In general, the closer you buy to the start of the school year, the better your chances of getting a good deal.
Products for the backyard. Enjoy the last days of summer with a great deal on lawn mowers and other seasonal outdoor equipment, such as a grill.
Swimsuits. There may not be many swimming days left by August, but that is exactly why swimsuit clearance sales will soar. Purchase swimsuits for next year now.
Labor Day, like many other federal holidays in the United States, falls on a Monday—in this case, the first of September. With the transition to cooler weather, the grilling season comes to an end, so shoppers can expect discounts on outdoor entertaining items. If you are in need of patio furniture and have a place to store it for the winter, now is the time to purchase. Retailers discount outdoor furniture by up to 50% to make room on the sales floor for holiday decorations. Unpurchased back-to-school clothing will be discounted again on Labor Day. Appliances and mattresses are also seeing an increase in sales.
Target Deal Days, which do not require membership, were held on October 6-8, 2022, beating out Amazon Prime’s days for early holiday shopping. The dates for 2023 have not yet been announced. However, if last year is any indication, shoppers can expect items from almost every department to be on sale. Target Deal Days discounts are primarily focused on products that can be given as gifts or used for holiday gatherings, so expect up to 50% off holiday toys, electronics, and video games.
Globally, Alibaba’s Singles’ Day is the largest shopping day in the world, which you may have only heard about because it has only recently gained traction in the United States. Shopping on mobile devices is the most common way to access e-commerce sites.
Singles’ Day shares the same date as Veterans Day in the United States, but the meanings couldn’t be more dissimilar. The date, Nov. 11 or 11/11, was a handy mnemonic for representing four singles, but it also had the added benefit of falling during a traditionally slow sales month for retailers (following China’s Golden Week holiday and before the Christmas rush).
Following in the footsteps of other major shopping holidays, Alibaba, the Chinese e-commerce equivalent of Amazon, has extended the “day” into deals that span weeks in advance.
November is the true Black Friday month, which means that some of the most popular technology products are at their lowest prices. Expect most retailers to offer some sort of discount on nearly every product category — not just on Black Friday, but all month.
Electronics. During Black Friday sales, electronics such as televisions, tablets, and laptop computers take center stage. Look for deals on headphones, smart speakers, and fitness trackers as well.
Clothing. The month of November has to be the busiest for clothing catalogs. Scan the brands you like for discounts, and shop stores like Gap, Land’s End and American Eagle directly online for surprise coupon codes.
Tools. Home improvement stores tend to discount tools, ladders and toolboxes during Black Friday promotions.
Cyber Monday is a close second as one of the biggest and most well-known shopping holidays around the world. The “holiday” has been in existence since 2005, and it is traditionally observed on the Monday following Thanksgiving in the United States. It was initially used to encourage online shopping by providing consumers with discounts for purchasing products online rather than in a physical store. And the concept worked.
According to Adobe, US consumers spent more than $840 million USD per day on Cyber Monday alone last year. According to the same source, US consumers spent more than $15 billion USD on Saturday and Sunday (more than 10% more than the previous year). And it’s easy to see why: For many customers, the chaos and violence are unsettling.
Green Monday, which takes place on the second Monday of December, is a lesser-known shopping day created by eBay more than a decade ago. The online retailer noticed an increase in e-commerce around that time, as shoppers attempted to finish their shopping lists before it was too late to ship gifts.
eBay continues to hold a Green Monday sale. During Green Monday in 2017, it offered hourly deals. Other retailers may also hold sales on that day, though they may not attribute their sales to Green Monday. Target got in on the act last year, offering $20 off every $100 spent.
There are many special shopping holidays other than Black Friday, Thanksgiving or Christmas in the US. We have listed 8 out of many popular shopping holidays when customers can seek for big promotion deals, even more profitable than Black Friday.
